  • Liberty Science Center

St. Gerard Majella School students visited the Liberty Science Center recently and had a wonderful time.  The entire trip was wonderful and comments from the children indicate that the Touch Tunnel and the climbing wall were huge hits.  The giant bubble maker had many children gathered around it during the time the students visited that room and the big blue sneezing nose was memorable. Fabiana in Second Grade commented, “The big bubble was very cool. I had a wonderful day.” Omar from Grade Two said, “My three favorite things were the touch tunnel, the rock climbing wall and the animals.” Second Grade student, Melanie stated, “I would like to go again with my family.  Thank you for our field trip.” Christopher from Grade Five enthused, “I liked the rock climbing wall.  It was very hard and it was kind of hard to hold on to the many bumps on the wall.” I liked the giant bubble maker.  You have to grab the rope and pull it down to bring up the bar.  After you do that you will see a giant bubble.  I loved it!” exclaimed a Seventh grader. The Sixth Grade students had many short comments.  “It was a great day!” “Many memories made today.”  “I loved the nose that sneezed!”   “It was amazing!  Thanks a lot.” Overall the students had a great experience.  They learned many new things and had unique learning opportunities.  We are truly grateful. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

  • Press Release 090313

Press Release September 3, 2013Contact:  Gregory Floyd                 973 984-9600                 gfloyd@tcsfund.org AS A NEW SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS, PATERSON PRINCIPAL LAUDS WORK OF TRI-COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP FUND Lelia Pappas, Principal of Blessed Sacrament School in Paterson, sees how Tri-County Scholarship Fund (TCSF) makes a difference in the lives and education of many of the areas’ financially disadvantaged kids and their parents. For 60 years, Blessed Sacrament School in Paterson, NJ has offered parents a high quality, values based education.  But in recent years, Principal Lelia Pappas has seen it become more difficult for families of limited financial means to choose a school that they feel best fits their child’s unique learning needs.  According to Pappas, that’s where Tri-County has made a difference. For more than thirty years, Tri-County Scholarship Fund has fought to provide educational opportunities for financially disadvantaged K-12th grade children in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties.  Since its founding in 1981, Tri-County has provided more than $20,000,000 in scholarships to thousands of the neediest children, the majority of whom come from families that live at or below the poverty level.  Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need and help students of all races, religions and backgrounds to attend private schools in grades K through twelve. Tri-County’s aim is to change lives, one student at a time.  Tri-County’s President, Gregory Floyd, says that Tri-County’s mission focuses on providing scholarships to primary and secondary school education.  According to Mr. Floyd, “Tri-County aims to provide an essential opportunity for kids from all walks of life to attend a high quality private school in the formative years of grades K-12.” This year, as Ms. Pappas prepares Blessed Sacrament School to open its doors for another school year, she takes comfort in the opportunity that TCSF Scholarships provide to many of her students.  “I’m so proud of the work that Tri-County does and the difference it makes in the lives of our students and their parents,” said Ms. Pappas. This year alone, 500 children from Paterson and throughout Morris, Passaic and Sussex Counties will receive Tri-County scholarships and continue the journey to a quality education.  When given the opportunity, many Tri-County scholarship recipeints have excelled.  In the past two years, 96% of Tri-County seniors graduated from high school and nearly all of that group headed straight to college in the Fall.  Among their accomplishments are scholarships to UCLA and Rutgers University. The majority of scholarships are funded by donations raised through Tri-County’s Annual Awards Dinner.  “The Dinner is so important to Tri-County’s success,” said Ms. Pappas, “and it’s a wonderfully uplifting night because so many individuals and corporate sponsors come out to strongly support Tri-County’s mission.” This year’s Annual Awards Dinner is scheduled for October 28, 2013 at the Hanover Marriott.  TCSF hopes to meet its goal of raising more than $800,000 at the Dinner, which honors John C. Parry, CEO and board member of Solix, Inc., Sr. Francis Raftery, S.C., President Emerita of the College of St. Elizabeth and Walter and Irene Crum, who have served a combined total of more than 50 years teaching at Oratory Preparatory School. Tri-County Scholarship Fund is a New Jersey-based not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, that is neither religious nor sectarian.  Through its scholarships, it has opened the door to a brighter future for thousands of New Jersey children. For more information about TCSF or the Annual Awards Dinner, for interview opportunities or to make a donation, please contact Gregory Floyd at (973) 984-9600 (gfloyd@tcsfund.org) or visit Tri-County’s web site at http://www.tcsfund.org.

  • Tri-County Offerings to Inner-City Students

Aware that an education is much more than sitting in class, Tri-County Scholarship Fund has been moving aggressively in the past year to increase the number of and range of “outside the classroom” learning opportunities it offers to its scholarship recipients. In October of ’07, one TCSF trustee opened up his beautiful farm in Tewksbury, NJ to three hundred TCSF grade school students. There, the children were treated to an entire day of pony rides, pumpkin-picking, clowns, inflatable rides, face-painting and, of course, lots of food! October also saw the TCSF high school students sharing the annual awards dinner with Tyco CEO Ed Breen, the trustees, their guests and corporate donors. Virtually all the tables in the room were populated by Tri-County high school award recipients, enjoying the evening and sharing their dreams and plans with fellow attendees. Needless to say, we received more comments about the students than about any other part of the evening! In December, several TCSF trustees joined students and teachers at Paterson Catholic to serve a holiday dinner to almost 500 senior citizens from Paterson, Clifton and Passaic. It is one of the school’s finest and most honored traditions, replete with the award-winning football team serving as the wheelchair brigade! March of ’08 saw thirty juniors and seniors at the Bank of America headquarters in Cranford for a day on networking, writing resumes, interview skills, time management, dressing for success, business etiquette, teamwork and banking career paths. Later in March the graduating TCSF seniors joined the trustees at a dinner celebrating the anticipated conclusion of their high school careers. It was an opportunity for the students and trustees to talk together about the future, college plans, vocational choices and also to pause and experience the satisfaction of a job well done. April will see almost 2,000 students at the Community Theatre of New Jersey for Productions of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (high school) and Beethoven’s Wig (grade school), a highly entertaining interactive introduction to world of classical music. Plans are also underway for the TCSF high school girls to be guests of the female partners of the J.H. Cohn accounting firm for a day on “Women Mentoring Women” which will introduce them to female executives and the world of accounting. In addition, the President of Wells Fargo Bank (North East Region) and her team are putting together a presentation on The World of Money for Fall of 2008 . In these and many other events on the horizon, Tri-County’s goal is to enable both grade school and high school students to experience the wide world of possibilities that an education opens up to them.

  • Tri-County Scholarship Fund Benefit Concert

On Wednesday, June 15th, 2011 some fifty-five guests came together to enjoy the beautiful sounds of Dorothy Fields, “The Evergreen Lyricist,” with guest soloists Patricia Dean, Marianne Patterson, Ed Thompson and Artistic Director Rev. Edward Lambro. This intimate musical gala was hosted in Harding Township by one of Tri-County’s trustees in order to benefit the Tri-County Scholarship Fund. Tri-County, as it is informally called, is a non-profit organization that raises educational scholarship funds for inner-city children in grades K-12 in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties. Ms. Lopez spoke of the difference that a Tri-County scholarship made to her to be able to continue her studies at Morris Catholic High School. Angeline will be attending Villanova University in the Fall. Proceeds from the concert help to provide scholarships to children from economically disadvantaged families in grades K-12. This past year Tri-County awarded 577 scholarships representing $1.2 million in aid. Tri-County Scholarship Fund will be celebrating its 30th anniversary at an awards dinner on Monday, October 11, 2011.

  • Alumnus Update FEB 2014 Josh Ford

Now a sophomore on full scholarship at Colgate University, Josh Ford excels both athletically and academically. Josh received Tri-County scholarships for several years while attending Paterson Catholic and later DePaul Catholic. When in high school Josh maintained a 3.89 grade point average and National Honor Society membership while volunteering time at his church and in the community as well as being an outstanding athlete. “Josh demonstrated his commitment to academics while also giving back,” said Benjie Wimberly, a Paterson N.J. Assemblyman, and one of Josh’s previous football coaches. “The thing that stood out the most was…Josh is not just a student-athlete, he is somebody who has high moral standards and outstanding character…somebody that the kids and the coaches respected.” John Galka, DePaul guidance counselor, has great respect for Josh’s consistent hard work and performance despite adversity. “Josh made the most of opportunities that were afforded to him and really understands what a good education could do for him,” said Galka. The day to day commitment required for high levels of achievement in both academics and sports is not easy. “My main struggle now is trying to find a balance. I have very little free time but my faith keeps me strong,” said Josh. The fact that his parents have always been great role models has kept Josh strong too. “They are both hard-working, never taking no for an answer…and helping me achieve my goals,” said Josh. Josh has plans for his career. “I want to graduate with a pre-Med focus in Biology and go on to get a Master’s in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine. I want to work with high school and college teams, and help kids in any way I can.” Benjie Wimberly, knows what makes Josh an exceptional human being. “It was so refreshing to have someone like Josh who understands his civic and community obligations…benefits from a good education…and wants to share those gifts,” said Wimberly. “I’ve coached a bunch of Division I players…including Victor Cruz now with the Giants. Josh is one of the best young men all-around that I’ve ever dealt with in 25 years of coaching and in education.”
