New Jersey and the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit

(aka – Education Freedom Tax Credit or ECCA)

Current Status: The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, scheduled to begin in 2027, represents a historic opportunity to close the education gap for both private and public school children. It will cost NJ taxpayers nothing.  It will cost the state nothing. But New Jersey children will benefit ONLY if our governor opts into the program, thereby allowing the $1700 tax credit donations to remain in New Jersey.

WHAT?

Redirect $1,700 of your tax payment to scholarships

It's simple and costs you nothing. The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit allows every federal taxpayer to re-direct up to $1,700 of their annual payment to the IRS and instead donate it to the scholarship granting organization (SGO) of their choice. These donated funds will go toward scholarships for financially needy students so they may afford to attend safe, independent schools of their family’s choice.

Why Designate Tri-County
as your preferred SGO

Serving Children

Who Need It Most

Your Federal Scholarship Tax Credit gift will go to the students who need the help most.  With Tri-County Scholarship Fund's longstanding mission to help financially vulnerable New Jersey children receive a safe, quality education, your tax credit gift will make an important difference for a child in need. Your tax credit will support scholarships for the children who would not otherwise be able to access these educational opportunities.

IT MATTERS

While it will cost you NOTHING to make this gift each year, your $1,700 tax credit gift will allow one more low-income child to receive a quality education, at a safe, independent school. Your annual tax credit gift will have transformational impact.

Your $1,700 Federal Tax Credit will change their futures.

WHY?

Why New Jersey should opt in

Effective in 2027, the NEW Federal Scholarship Tax Credit helps ALL students in the state, whether at public or independent schools. It “grows the pie” of educational opportunity in every state where the state’s governor “opts into” the program. It's up to Governor Sherrill to opt in for New Jersey.

The new federal scholarship tax credit will help close the education gap for low-income children and those living in economically depressed zip codes. It will provide scholarship funds not only for tuition, but for all types of education enrichment including tutoring, SAT prep, extended school day, autism, special ed, language, art, dance, music classes, and more. The federal scholarship tax credit will allow significantly more money to be spent on education in our state, without costing the NJ taxpayers a cent. It allows more low-income and inner-city children to access quality educational and enrichment opportunities, just like other children who live in more economically stable zip codes of New Jersey.

Eligible taxpayers may be able to direct up to $1,700 through the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit beginning in 2027, if New Jersey opts into the program.
