Generations of Strength: Julia’s Journey Forward

Julia traces her story back more than a century, to her great-great-grandmother, Veronica, who immigrated from Poland in 1905 to a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. After the death of her husband, she moved to Newark and opened a tailor shop, determined to create greater opportunities for herself and her children. For Julia, her great-great-grandmother’s story represents more than family history. It is the beginning of a legacy of hard work and perseverance that continues to shape her today.

Growing up, Julia watched the people around her work hard to build better lives for themselves and their families. She learned early that opportunity is not always something that comes easily — and that making the most of it often requires determination, sacrifice and resilience.

Those lessons became especially meaningful after Julia experienced profound loss at a young age. When she was eight years old, her father passed away suddenly at the age of 50. A few years later, she lost her sister. Faced with life-changing loss so early, Julia was forced to mature quickly and came to understand just how precious life can be.

Through it all, her mother became her greatest example of strength. As the family’s sole provider and primary caregiver, she worked hard to build a career and create a stable and loving home for Julia. “To say she is my role model would be an understatement,” Julia shared. Her mother also understood the importance of finding the right educational environment for her daughter.

An Opportunity at the Right Time

Julia began her education in public school, where she was doing well academically but often lacked the guidance and encouragement she needed. When the COVID-19 pandemic moved school online, those challenges became even greater.

Her mother wanted more for Julia — a school where she would be supported, challenged and encouraged to reach her full potential. They found that environment at Pope John.

Julia was thrilled to be accepted for seventh grade, but there was one significant obstacle. As the sole source of income for the family, her mother did not know how she could afford the tuition. Then they learned about Tri-County Scholarship Fund.

With the help of a Tri-County scholarship, Julia was able to enroll at Pope John and begin a new chapter in her education.

Growing in the Classroom, on the Track and in Faith

At Pope John, Julia found teachers who cared about her, challenged her to think critically and encouraged her to believe in her abilities. In high school at Pope John, she earned honor roll recognition and AP Scholar distinction while also discovering another place where her determination could flourish: competitive running.

Julia began taking cross country and track more seriously in high school after seeing what was possible when strong coaching was combined with consistent practice and personal discipline. She saw athletes improve year after year and believed that if she committed herself to the same kind of work, she could do it too. She did.

Julia became a varsity captain and an All-American runner, competing at some of the most prestigious meets in the country. Running taught her discipline, resilience, teamwork and leadership — qualities that reflected many of the lessons she had already learned from her family.

Her years at Pope John also deepened her faith. Through the school’s Catholic community and values-based education, Julia became involved in Campus Ministry leadership, music ministry and service projects that gave her opportunities to serve others. The combination of academics, athletics, faith and community gave Julia exactly what her mother had hoped for: an environment where she could grow into the best version of herself.

The Next Chapter: Williams College

Julia has begun a remarkable new chapter as a first-generation college student at Williams College, where she continues both her academic and running careers.

She is studying political science and hopes to pursue a future career in law or government.

Julia’s path to Williams has been shaped by the people and opportunities that came before her. She carries with her the perseverance of a great-great-grandmother who crossed an ocean and built a new life. The example of a mother who worked tirelessly to create opportunity for her daughter. The encouragement of teachers and coaches who challenged her to aim higher. And the chance to attend Pope John through a Tri-County scholarship.

“I have Tri-County Scholarship Fund to thank for giving me the chance to attend this great school — the school that helped me grow, excel, and look into the future with confidence,” Julia said.

A scholarship does more than help a student attend a school. It can place a young person in an environment where talent is recognized, potential is nurtured and dreams begin to feel possible.

From a family legacy that began in Poland more than a century ago, to Pope John and now Williams College, Julia has carried forward the lessons of hard work, resilience and faith that have shaped her journey.

And as she begins this next chapter, she is ready to build on that legacy in a way that is entirely her own.
