Honoring Our Co-founder

Edward L. Hennessy, Jr.
(1928–2026)

It is with profound gratitude that we pay tribute to our beloved co-founder, Edward L. Hennessy, Jr., who passed away on May 8, 2026 at the age of 98.

Ed lived a life that reflected the promise of the American Dream — and dedicated that life to extending opportunity to others.

Roots That Shaped a Lifetime

Raised in Boston during the Great Depression, Ed developed the perseverance, discipline, and faith that would guide both his remarkable career and his lifelong commitment to service. In his autobiography, Making the American Dream a Reality, he reflected on a journey defined not simply by success, but by gratitude — and by the conviction that opportunity carries with it a responsibility to give back.

That conviction would shape thousands of lives beyond his own.

Leadership with Purpose

Ed became one of the nation’s most respected corporate leaders and a trusted advisor to presidents and the Pope.

He served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of AlliedSignal Inc. from 1979 to 1991, guiding the company through a period of significant growth and transformation. Earlier, he held senior leadership roles at United Technologies Corporation, serving as Executive Vice President, President, and a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He also served as Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance at Heublein, Inc., and began his corporate career as Controller at ITT Corporation.

Ed’s counsel was sought not only in corporate boardrooms, but on the world stage. He served as a trusted lay financial advisor to Pope John Paul II and formed relationships with four Presidents of the United States — reflecting the breadth of his influence and the respect he commanded across public and private leadership.

Yet despite extraordinary professional achievement, Ed remained deeply grounded. He viewed leadership not as status, but as stewardship.

A Shared Vision: Ed and Ruth

At the heart of Ed’s life and philanthropy was his beloved, late wife, Ruth.

Together, they devoted their generosity to helping young people access strong, values-based education. They believed education was the surest pathway to freedom — not only for individual children, but for the future of our country.

Their shared commitment was formalized through the Edward L. Hennessy, Jr. and Ruth S. Hennessy Foundation, ensuring that their support of educational opportunity would endure for generations.

Ruth was not simply a supporter of Ed’s work — she was his partner in it.

The Founding of Tri-County Scholarship Fund

In 1981, Ed joined forces with Frank J. Rodimer to establish Tri-County Scholarship Fund. They envisioned an organization that would provide K–12 scholarships to financially disadvantaged children so they could attend accredited private and parochial schools.

The effort began with a single fundraising dinner — which Ed often joked:

“The dinner cost me $50,000 and we brought in $45,000!”

It was a modest beginning, but it sparked momentum. Business leaders rallied. Families who were sacrificing deeply for their children found a partner in Ed and in Tri-County Scholarship Fund.

A community formed around a shared conviction that educational opportunity should never depend solely on income or zip code.

The Work He Was Most Proud Of

Though his professional accomplishments were extraordinary, Ed often said that Tri-County was the achievement he treasured most.

“Tri-County Scholarship Fund is the accomplishment that I am most proud of in my life because it gives at-risk families a leg up in the quest to realize their American Dream.”

In a historic affirmation of that belief, Ed strengthened his legacy through a $1 million planned gift to ensure the mission would continue long beyond his lifetime.

He remained clear about its urgency:

“I think this cause is more important today than when I started it… These children are the most valuable asset we have for the future.”

A Legacy That Endures

Today, thousands of students have received scholarships because of the foundation Ed and Ruth helped build.

Their legacy continues through the enduring strength of Tri-County Scholarship Fund and through the leadership of their daughter, Beth Hennessy, a Trustee of the organization, who carries forward her parents’ steadfast belief in educational opportunity.

Every scholarship awarded.
Every graduate stepping forward.
Every family strengthened.

We are grateful for the leadership, inspiration and the lasting impact of Edward L. Hennessy, Jr.

The cause he began will benefit generations to come.
