The Lawyers for Tri-County Awards Reception was held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the Park Avenue Club in Florham Park, New Jersey. 125 guests arrived and networked with the honorees, friends, and colleagues.
The Lawyers recognized at this year’s event were: Hon. Dennis M. Cavanaugh, U.S.D.J. (Ret.) and Joseph P. LaSala, Esq., of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter LLP; William M. Laufer, Esq., of Laufer, Dalena, Cadicina, Jensen & Boyd, LLC; and William B. McGuire, Esq., of Tompkins, McGuire, Wachenfeld & Barry. The awards recognized four outstanding lawyers for their contribution to the legal profession.
The event benefited Tri-County’s Freedom Scholars Program, an initiative of the Tri-County Scholarship Fund that awards generous scholarships to high-performing students to attend private secondary schools. The highlight of the event was the remarks by current Freedom Scholar, Christian Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado is a junior at DePaulHigh School in Wayne. During his remarks, Christian shared his life journey thus far. He is being raised by his mother, an immigrant to this country from the Dominican Republic. Christian indicated his deep appreciation for the scholarship, and his intention to give back to the community as a sign of appreciation. The audience’s long applause after Christian’s remarks was a clear signal that all present wished to support Christian in his future endeavors.
The guests enjoyed dinner, while networking at their tables and throughout the room with those assembled. Awards were presented to the five amazing, accomplished, and inspirational attorneys, each of whom was introduced by a friend or business colleague. Karol Corbin Walker, Esq., of LeClair Ryan emceed the event. Gregory Floyd, President of Tri-County provided opening remarks, and Tim Duffy, Esq, of Coughlin & Duffy, Chairman of Tri-County, closed the awards ceremony. The event was chaired by Christopher Stracco, Esq., a Tri-County Trustee, and partner at the Day Pitney law firm. Tim, Chris, Gregory, Trustee Joseph Gonnella, and Minnie Simon of Tri-County were members of the program committee. Fellow Trustees Rick DeBel of Bank of America, Ted Knauss of PNC Bank, and Bob Cavalero of Catholic Book Publishing, were also in attendance.
The $20 million dollars in scholarship monies awarded by Tri-County over the past 32 years have changed the lives of many students. A perfect and shining example of one such life is Freedom Scholarship recipient Christian Alvarado.
