33rd Annual Awards Dinner Recap
FOX News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly Honored as Hall of Fame Award Recipient
The Tri-County Scholarship Fund (TCSF) honored FOX News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly with its Hall of Fame Award on October 20, during the 33rd annual gala at the Hanover Marriott in Whippany, New Jersey. The fund raises money to provide financial support to deserving and economically disadvantaged children in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties of New Jersey, so they can obtain a quality, values-centered education through accredited K-12 private elementary and secondary schools. This year’s gala event raised $620,000.
Also honored at the event were Sister Jo-Ann Pompa, principal of St. Gerard Majella School in Paterson, and Sister Patricia Pompa, principal of Villa Walsh Academy in Morristown. The two nuns, who are blood sisters, received the Tri-County Scholarship Fund Making a Difference Award in honor of the service that they have given to generations of young people.
Steve Abudato, (Emmy Award-winning Anchor, Thirteen/WNET (PBS) and Best-selling Author, “You Are the Brand”) was Master of Ceremonies for the event. Abudato is also producing a documentary about the TSCF which will air on WNET-TV early next year.
The Tri-County Scholarship Fund (TSCF) began in 1981. Since then, over 30,000 scholarships have been awarded, representing over $22 million in assistance to students. Scholarships are awarded annually to hundreds of students from the tri-county area. Many families are immigrants struggling to provide their children with a quality education in a safe and disciplined environment. Gregory Floyd, President of the TSCF states that “last year, our scholarship recipients had a 97% graduation rate, with the same rate attending colleges and universities. With graduation rates in some New Jersey cities as low as 46%, our kids are able to achieve where otherwise they could not.”
O’Reilly, host of “The O’Reilly Factor” and author of best sellers including Killing JFK, Killing Lincoln, and Killing Jesus talked about his early career as a teacher and the importance of education for young people: “Students in economically challenged areas need to believe they are just as smart and just as capable as those raised with more opportunity. Programs like Tri-County give them that sense of self awareness by offering them a better education.”
Timothy Duffy, Esq., Chairman of the board of Tri-County said that “the choice of Bill O’Reilly as our Hall of Fame Honoree was important. He is a vocal thought-leader in the national community and has always supported equal opportunities for all to receive the best education possible.”
Tri-County Scholarship Fund provides financial support to deserving and economically disadvantaged children in Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties. Proceeds from the Annual Awards Dinner will benefit these efforts. In the past four years, Tri-County scholarship recipients have been accepted to Colgate, Cornell, Rutgers, Georgetown, UCLA, Villanova, Columbia, NYU and Notre Dame, most on full scholarships.
